Abstract
762,361. Linear-dimension gauges NATIONAL HESEAHCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Sept. 9, 1954 [June 9, 1953], No. 15881/53. Class 106 (2). A gauge for bores or the like comprises a body capable of locating itself in the bore so that two or more measuring feelers are held in the measuring position, the gauge comprising means responsive to the gap between the inner ends of the feelers for giving the gauge reading and a handle having a flexible connection with the body. The embodiments described have two opposed hollow cylindrical feelers 13, 14, one, 13, having a blind end contacting the bore, and the other, 14, having a coaxial rod 34 adjustably secured within it by a collat device 38 for varying its length. The body is located in a bore by pins 27, 28. The handle is joined to the body by flexible bellows 26 or a ball and socket joint. In one embodiment, Fig. 3, air under pressure is fed either to the inside or. outside of the feelers, the gap 17 between them permitting its escape at a rate which is translated into a reading by known means. A spring 31 ensures the seating of the body on the pins 27, 28. In another embodiment, Fig. 8, the distance apart of the feelers regulates the position of a core 62 within windings 63, 64, the windings being connected to translating means for the reading. In other embodiments (Figs. 4-6, not shown) a core or coil on one feeler slides within windings carried by the other feeler. In a further variation (Fig. 7, not shown), a rod passing through the handle engages a wedgepiece contacting bevelled surfaces on the feelers, movement of the feelers permitting axial movement of the rod and actuation of a mechanical indicator. The Specification states that the invention could be adapted to the measurement of diameters, lengths and thicknesses by the body being in the form of or incorporating bow to straddle the workpiece.
