Abstract
760,501. Casting-processes. ENGLISH STEEL CORPORATION. Ltd., and SMITH, E. W. Nov. 5, 1954 [Feb. 15, 1954], No. 4397/54. Class 83 (1). Hollow-ingots or other castings are made by lowering into a partially-filled mould, so as to displace molten metal to the requisite height, a cone having an outer sheath spaced from an inner heat-absorbing body, so that the sheath or initial entry of the cone into the molten metal, will collapse against the inner body, and subsequentially revert substantially to its original shape to permit withdrawal of the inner body. The core comprises a sheetmetal sheath 7 and a solid metal supporting- member 8 of a diameter slightly less than the internal diameter of the sheath, and supported therein by lugs 10 and a bar 11. The cone is centred by a spider 2 bolted to the top of the mould 1. After inserting in the melt and remaining for a determined period, the body 8 may be withdrawn from the sheath and a similar body of slightly smaller diameter inserted if further heat extraction is desired, this process being repeated if necessary. In a modification the body in the sheath is split longitudinally into four segments which yield radially under the contraction of the metal, and in a further modification the body is made of a number of discs threaded on to a centre spindle, which discs may also be split axially to allow radial contraction. The cores may be bored to allow circulation of coolant such as water or air.
