To form centre selvedges, binder threads f3, f6 are fed by needles 6, 6<SP>1</SP> which penetrate the shed, when formed, but of which the thread guiding eyes do not reach the crossover position of selvedge warp pairs f1, f2 and f4, f5, which position is beyond the crossover line X, X1 of the remaining warps; the needles are swung in unison across the warps, from one extreme position to the other, by electromagnets at the instant of warp crossover, to lay their threads back and forth across and over the selvedge warps, but below the path X, X1 of the shuttles which, in passing, press down the binder threads so that they become held down by the wefts f7. The electromagnets are controlled by a switch 17, operated by a cam 20 moving with the healds. The ordinary warp threads 8 extent from the warp beam B, through the eyes of healds 7, 8, and a reed 9, to the weaving ring W. The selvedge warp threads f1, f2, f4, f5 pass, at a lower level, through the eyes of heald blades 14, 141; 15, 151, carried by the staves 19, 19a, which bear the healds 7, 8. A finger 23 is pivoted upwardly against the action of a spring 25, by each passing shuttle, to maintain the alignment and spacing of the centre selvedges, as they are woven into the fell.
