Abstract
753,507. Electron beam apparatus. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. Sept. 27, 1954 [Sept. 25, 1953], No. 26474/53. Class 39 (1). An electron gun comprises two spaced sheets of insulating material and provided with two locating holes one for the cathode, the other for the modulator, a third electrode being located on the edges of the sheets. The cathode is a flat metal tube 1 with a doubled heater coil 3 and an emissive area 2, and it extends through deformed slots 5 in rectangular mica sheets 6. The cathode terminal tag extends through a hole in the hollow nickel cylindrical housing 13 which supports the sheets 6. The modulator 8 is a shallow circular dish, with its flange 9 corrugated and held in a rectangular slot in each mica. The anode is a tapering nickel cylinder 23 bent to form a rim 27 and a flange 26 which is welded to a similar flange 15 on the housing 13. The mica sheets are held in position against the anode 23 by a spring 19 welded to the bottom of the housing 13 and bearing against the ends 16 of the sheets. A triangular mica sheet 28 aligned with the flange 15, 26 is secured to the cathode end of the housing 13, holes being formed for the supporting rods. The modulator is degassed by heating by electron bombardment, utilizing the large area of the cathode. A second emissive coating may be provided on the underside of the cathode and combined with further electrodes held in the mica sheets to form an auxiliary thermionic valve, and one or more additional electrodes may be supported alongside the modulator 8 and anode 23. These auxiliary electrodes may be degassed by electron bombardment, the cathode having a surplus of emissive material for the purpose. Dimensions are given in the Specification.
