Abstract

The hollow particles described in Specification 743,866 may be applied (with or without a sealing liquid) as a floating layer on volatile products to inhibit the evaporation thereof. Thus the evaporation of gasoline may be inhibited by applying hollow particles of ureaformaldehyde resin mixed with polyvinyl methyl ether. Specification 744,070 also is referred to.ALSO:The evaporation of volatile products is inhibited by covering the surface of the product with a floating layer of individual small, hollow, gas-filled, hole-free particles of a material inert to said volatile product (e.g. synthetic resin, sodium aluminate or silicate, cellulose derivatives, proteins and alginate particles) the particles having an average diameter of less than 500 microns and a liquid displacement of from 0.05 to 0.6. The particles, which may be prepared as described in Specification 743,866, may be applied as a floating layer of a foam containing also a non-volatile sealing liquid which sealing liquid may also be naturally present in the volatile product or not. The volatile product may be a volatile hydrocarbon, e.g. gasoline, naphthas and liquid butane, alcohols such as methyl, ethyl and isopropyl alcohols, trichloroethylene, liquid chlorine, oxygen or nitrogen, acetone, ethers, sugar solutions and electroplating solutions. The sealing liquid may be a non-volatile oil such as white oil. Specification 744,070 also is referred to.
