Abstract

748.281. Earth-boring tools. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. April 9, 1954 [April 10, 1953] No. 9873/53. Class 85 An earth-boring tool for boring a hole and then under-reaming its lower end, or boring holes of different diameters, comprises a rotatable and vertic. ally-slidable hollow shaft 11 having a pair of opposed auger, &c. blades 23, 23 on the lcwer end thereof which blades are so pivoted as to be radially adjustable under control means 34, 35 at the upper end. The boring shaft 11 is rotated through a gear box 12 from driving means, not shown. and is moved verticallv by a rack drive, also not shown, applied to two bars 13 which engage arms 14 on the gear box 12 and are united by top and bottom cross bars 15, 16 to which the shaft is rotatably locked through shoulders 17, 18. The frame 22 of the auger, to which integral arms 25 on the blades 23, 23 are pivoted at 24. 24, is clamped to the lower end of the shaft 11 and the arms 25 terminate within a cross slot 28 in a crosshead 29 slidable in a tubular part 27 of said frame, the crosshead 29 being connected to the control means 34, 35 by a rod 31 which extends axially through the shaft 11 and is connected to the screwed rod 34 through a ball thrust bearing 36. The rod 34 engages a cross-bar 33 connected to the cross-bar 15 bv pillars 32 and is provided with adjustable stops 37. 38 to determine the diameter of the main bore and the under-reamed part respectively; another stop 39 may be fitted to the shaft 11 above the gear-box 12 to facilitate boring to the correct predetermined depth and maintaining that depth during the under-reaming operation. Preferably a scale 41 is provided adjacent the handwheel 35 of the screw 34 to indicate the under-reaming diameter, also a remote indicating dial 44 liriked by a Bowden wire 43 to a slide 42 engaging said handwheel. In operation, after boring the hole to a depth determined by the stop 39, the screw 34 is rotated until the stop 38 engages the cross-bar 33 whereupon the rod 31 is shifted axially to open out the auger blades to the underreaming diameter. In a modifcation axial movement of the rod 31 is effected bv a piston located within a hydraulic cylinder.
