Abstract

A shampoo comprises a water soluble organic synthetic detergent and a minor proportion in relation to the proportion of detergent of a substantially colourless hair-substantive organic fluorescent dye, in an aqueous medium. The detergent is preferably an anionic sulphated or sulphonated detergent such as sulphuric acid esters of polyhydric alcohols incompletely esterified with C8 or higher fatty acids ("coconut" fatty acid monoglyceride monosulphate, lauroyl mono- and di-glyceride monosulphates); C8 and higher primary and secondary fatty alcohol sulphates (lauryl sulphate and the mixed fatty alcohol sulphates from coconut oil fatty acids); C8 and higher fatty acid ethanolamide sulphates and C8 and higher fatty acid amides of amino lower alkyl sulphonic acids (lauric acid amide of taurine); dioctyl sulphosuccinate; and alkyl aryl sulphonates (dodecyl and decyl benzene sulphonates). The anionic detergents may be used as their sodium, potassium, lithium ammonium or lower alkylolamine salts. Suitable fluorescent dyes are 4-methyl-7-dimethylamino coumarin, 4-methyl-7-diethyl-aminocoumarin and 5, 7-dihydroxyl 4-methyl coumarin. The pH of the composition may be between 4-7. Water-soluble and water miscible alcohols such as ethyl alcohol, isopropyl alcohol, propylene glycol and methyl carbitol may be used as solubilising agents. Other additional ingredients include perfumes, hair conditioners (lanolin, lecithin, fatty alcohols, fatty amides) inorganic salts (ammonium sulphate, triethanolamine sulphate, sodium pyrophosphate), glycerine, colouring materials, preservatives (sodium benzoate) and thickening agents (sodium carboxymethyl cellulose). In an example a liquid shampoo is made from the ammonium salt of the sulphated monoglyceride of coconut oil fatty acids, 4-methyl 7-diethyl amino coumarin, ethyl alcohol, perfume and water.
