746,663. Thermally-actuated valves. THERMOSTATIC MIXING VALVE CO., Ltd. March 3, 1953 [Feb. 23, 1952], No. 4810/52. Class 135. In a thermostatic mixing valve for mixing water and steam in which the fluids are controlled by a valve having tapering head portions 32, 33 operating respectively in tapering bores 31, 30 under the control of a thermal element, e.g. the bimetal coils 44, 45 acting through the screw 42 in the mixing chamber 13, thermal communication between the element and one of the fluids before mixing, e.g. the hot fluid in inlet 21, together with frictional engagement between the head portion 33 controlling this fluid and its bore is such that the head stops the flow of this fluid for a substantial period if the other fluid, e.g. the cold, fails. The wall 19 is made a good thermal conductor and the apex angle of the coned heads is so chosen that, although the valve is frictionally held closed, when cold water again flows in the inlet 23 its pressure on the cone 32 together with the action of the cold water on the thermal element via passage 28 will reopen the valve head 33. The construction and operation of the mixing valve is described in Specification 746,662.
