Intaglio printing plates or cylinders are made by printing a diapositive half-tone original and a screen for producing doctor lands one after the other onto a light-sensitized colloidal layer lying, on a metal underlayer, to produce in the case of the screen hardened lines extending downwards into contact with the metal; subjecting the colloidal layer to prolonged treatment with water until the unhardened parts of the layer below the hardened parts and separated by the hardened screen lines are dissolved and fully washed out and the hardened parts sink down and are directly deposited on the metal, and then etching the metal through the hardened image parts.
