Abstract

742,751. Wood wool-cement panels. TEC TUM CORPORATION. July 31, 1953, No 21352/53. Class 70. In forming panelling material from a continuously moving mat of wood wool impregnated with a water slurry of powdered cement which sets exothermically, e.g. a water and magnesium oxide-magnesium chloride or sulphate preparation, the mat is heated and passed between heated compressing surfaces, the heating being sufficient to advance the setting of the cement to the extent that the mat will not expand on emergence from between the compressing surfaces. With the apparatus of Fig. 1, wood wool conveyed to a shoot 3 is sprayed therein at 4 with a water and magnesium oxide-magnesium salt slurry, falls on to a foraminated moving belt 1 and is spread thereon as a mat 2 with the aid of a suction box 33 under the belt, is conveyed through a chamber 5 wherein there is passed through the mat a regulated steam-air mixture, e.g. such a mixture having a temperature between 100‹ F. and 140‹ F. and of moisture content such that the mat is neither dried nor wetted, is passed between rollers 37 for compression to the desired density, is passed in a heated press chamber 9 between opposed rubber conveyer belts 10 backed by metal platens 11, the temperature of the press chamber being preferably 190‹ F., and, on emergence from the press chamber, is passed, preferably after further heating for final setting in a chamber of the same temperature as the press chamber, through drying ovens wherein hot air is blown through the mat.
