Abstract
742,440. Crimping fibres. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Sept. 29, 1954 [Oct. 21, 1953], No. 29029/53. Class 120 (3). Apparatus for crimping artificial filaments between gear wheels comprises a device. which automatically effects disengagement of. the wheels when excessive pressure develops therebetween. In one form, the device comprises a pair of weak retaining bolts each of which holds movably mounted bearings on either side of at least one of the wheel shafts: excess pressure causes shearing of the bolts and one wheel is detached from the other by a pair of springs. In the apparatus shown, a driven, steam-heated gear wheel 1 is mounted on fixed shaft bearings 2 and 3 and normally engages an idler gear wheel 4 mounted on slidable shaft bearings 5 and 6; when excessive pressure between the wheels occurs, a shear pin 15 fails in a double shearing action between a link 13 and a fixed support 17, thereby releasing a spring 14 which pulls the wheel 4 out of mesh with the wheel 1 by means of a system of levers 7, 8, 9, 10 and 13. The shear pin may be replaced by a spring-loaded catch e.g. a tapering or rounded bolt resting in a recess or notch in a bar, which is released by the excess pressure. The device may be combined with stop-mechanism for arresting the drive to the gear wheels and/or the feeding of tow to the apparatus.
