Abstract

Apparatus for analyzing a gas for two different components comprises two cells 8, 12 each containing a catalytic element connected in a balanceable electric network 21, 22, and arranged to be heated and exposed to the gas, and a generator 9 <PICT:0740436/III/1> <PICT:0740436/III/2> which supplies two different gaseous products, one to each cell, to combine respectively with the two different constituents of the gas. A sample of furnace flue gas or internal combustion engine exhaust gas, to be analysed for combustible constituents and oxygen, is introduced through pipe 3 via a pressure regulator 5, which may be of the type described in U.S.A. Specification 2,438,973, and is divided into two streams; one stream flows through orifice 7 and mixes with hydrogen from pipe. 11. Elements comprising the orifices 6, 7 are replaceable by elements having orifices of different sizes. The oxygen and hydrogen are provided by an electrolytic generator 9 (see Group XXXVI). The cells 8, 12 and the pipes leading thereto are arranged within a metallic housing 4 maintained at constant temperature by heater 18 and thermostat 19. As shown in Fig. 2 each cell is provided with an insulated base 40 carrying measuring filament 42 and comparison filament 41; shield 43 is divided by partition 44 into two parts, that enclosing the measuring filament being provided with metallic mesh screen 45 and that enclosing the comparison filament with a small aperture 46. The results of the two analyses may be combined by using a single balanceable electric network as described in U.S.A. Specification 2,420,430, or by providing links 23, 24, actuated by motor M; movement of the link 24 operates pilot control valve 25 and/or indicator 26. The gas sample regulator 5 comprises a reciprocating part 27 which drops by gravity if the gas flow is interrupted; magnet 28 and armature 29 then actuate switch 31 which operates lamp 32 or a control valve. The analyser may be modified to analyse two separate gas samples respectively for combustible content and free oxygent content.
