737,153. Filters for molten metal. ALUMINIUM LABORATORIES, Ltd. Oct. 21, 1953 [Nov. 18, 1952], No. 29053/53. Class 46. [Also in Group XXII] In casting aluminium at least one glass-cloth filter is interposed between the point of exit of the molten aluminium from the furnace, and its point of solidification in the mould. Molten aluminium from a furnace 2 flows through a glass-cloth filter 5 in a distributer basin 4 and into a continuous-casting mould 10 wherein is supported a skim pan 12 comprising a glasscloth filter 15 normally submerged below the end of the dip tube 9. The glass-cloth is preferably a woven cloth with interlocking threads as in a leno weave, Fig. 6, and the holes are preferably substantially square and have dimensions of the order of 0.01 inch. The use of glass-cloth filters is stated to give an improved ingot and to reduce the thickness of the scalp necessarily removed from the ingot before rolling. Either filter 5 or filter 15 may be used alone. The use of heavy wire screens through which molten aluminium passes on its way from a feed-trough to a distributing basin is stated to be known, the screen having a coating of a refractory such as whitewash or whiting with a sodium silicate binder.
