Abstract

736,780. Assembling screws and washers. ILLINOIS TOOL WORKS. July 5, 1951 [Aug. 3, 1950], No. 16003/51. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). Rolling; bending.-A strip of washers or similar elements is fed from a continuous coil, applied to fasteners such as screw blanks, detents are roll embossed on the screw shanks to maintain the washers in place and the assemblies are broken from the strip, the separated parts being discharged either to a storage container or to feed means for a number of thread-rolling mills. The strip is fed through the machine in a substantially rectilinear path. Screw blanks are fed from a hopper and pass by gravity between inclined rails 18, Fig. 2, and under a cover rail 24 to positive forwarding means in the form of an endless chain 86, the link joints of which engage the spaces between the heads. The strip of attached link-washers 52 is fed from a coil and enters, at 59, slots formed in the sides of the guide rails and sloping upwards to the top surface thereof at 60. Whilst passing through the slots the washers are telescoped on to the screw blanks which are held down on to the rails by spring pads 102 acting on the upper side of the chain. While still under control of the chain the blanks pass between an embossing roll 144, Fig. 9, and a plain roll 116 loosely mounted on the eccentric end of an adjustably fined stub-shaft. Small snugs 154, Fig. 11, are thus raised on the screw shanks and serve to maintain the washers in position close to the heads during subsequent handling. When the threads are rolled these snugs disappear. From the rolls the strip passes by short guide rails to a rotating disc 174 journalled to a bracket at 166 and driven at 170. Each of 'three radial slots 180, Fig. 5, in the disc receive in turn a screw shank whilst the head and washer pass through a central bore 178. The rotation of the disc thus twists off the washer on the contained screw from the adjacent washer held against rotation by the guides. The breaking disc, embossing rolls and feed chain are all geared to a motor-driven shaft, adjustments being provided when needed. Specifications 736,779 and 736,788 are referred to.
