Abstract

731,330. Centrifugal separators. HUTCHINSON INSTRUMENT CO., Ltd., and HOWES, A. E. May 24, 1954 [July 2, 1953], No. 18407/53. Class 23. A centrifuge, particularly for the separation of bituminous material, comprises a rotary plate 1 formed near its periphery with a series of apertures 2, support members 8 pivoted in the apertures, sleeves 9 adapted to receive containers 10 and slidably mounted in or on the members, and resilient means 14 opposing radial outward movement of the sleeves at low rotational speeds of the plate but yielding when a predetermined speed is reached so that the sleeves and containers move outwardly to rest on abutments on the plate. The supports 8 comprise rings mounted on trunnions 7, the sleeves 9 have flanges 11, 12, and the resilient means 14 comprise springs interposed between the flanges 12 and the supports. The containers 10 have a flange 13 at their mouths, have flat external bases, and are of such a length that when the springs yield the bases of the containers contact the abutments 16 before the flanges 11 of the sleeves contact the abutments 4. Means are provided to ensure that, with the plate at rest, the flanged ends 12 of the sleeves are uppermost to receive the containers.
