Abstract

An aluminium oxide film on aluminium or an aluminium alloy is impregnated with an inorganic colouring compound insoluble or only slightly soluble in water by treatment with a solution containing soluble components adapted to react to form the desired insoluble compound, the constitution of the solution being such that reaction is delayed until after impregnation of the film. Precipitation may be retarded by inclusion in the solution of an agent forming a complex with the reacting anion or cation of the such agents including ammonia or a dicarboxylic acid having the active structure <FORM:0731247/II/1> R being a low molecular weight alkyl group, examples of such acids being succinic acid, or phtalic acid or tricarballylic acid. Examples of impregnating solutions are (i) a solution of nickel di-chromate obtained by dissolving nickel carbonate in chromic acid, and adding the solution to water until pH is between 5 and 6, the solution being employed at 80 DEG C.; (ii) a solution containing 110 gms. chromic acid and 60 gms. nickel carbonate per litre of water heated to 80 DEG C., sufficient ammonia solution (S.G.O. 880) being added to redissolve the precipitate formed at first; alternatively this solution may be at room temperature; (iii) a solution of nickel di-chromate is obtained as in example (i) and a molecular equivalent of succinic acid added and pH adjusted to about 6 by addition of ammonia; (iv) ammonium chromate is added to a solution of cobalt acetate to form a precipitate which is redissolved by addition of malonic acid and ammonia; (v) ammonium chromate is added to a solution of ferric ammonium oxalate and pH adjusted to between 5 and 6.
