728,160. Vulcanizing presses for tyres. MACBETH, C. Jan. 4, 1954 [Oct. 13, 1952], No. 25556/52. Class 87 (2) A press of the kind that vulcanizes two tyres simultaneously between superposed mould holders b, c, d, the lower holder b being fixed and the intermediate and upper holders c, d being movable, has special means for actuating the two movable holders. The press being closed, first the two movable holders are raised vertically in parallelism, d being moved twice as fast as c ; then the upper holder is opened angularly as shown in Fig. 5, the upper tyre moulded between c and d being lifted out of c ; then the upper tyre is removed; the intermediate holder c is moved angularly to the position shown in Fig. 6, the lower tyre moulded between band c being lifted out of b; then the lower tyre is removed. From the holders d, c extend arms s, q which carry at their ends spindles t, r disposed in vertical slots v, u in the fixed press frame a. A lever w fulcrummed at a fixed point a<1> on the press frame a engages the spindle t and is connected by a link x to spindle r, the arrangement being such that when spindle t rises in its slots a similar movement of half the amount is imparted to spindle r. On a shaft y driven as by an electric motor (not shown) is mounted a cam 3 which raises spindle t and hence spindle r. The shaft y carries crank arms 4 connected by links 6 to toggle arms e which are pivoted to fixed lower points f and to the upper ends of links g connected to holder d. The press being closed, as in Fig. 1, the shaft y is rotated, whereby first the holders c, d rise in parallelism, the vertical movement of c being controlled by guides 7 on d which engage rollers 8 on c, then d is moved angularly to the Fig. 4 position. During these movements the bead-ring 19 in the upper mould is raised, with its tyre, out of c by ascent of a plunger 24, this plunger pushing upwardly a stem 18 depending from bead-ring 19. Then (the upper tyre having been removed) an electric motor 14 is started and rotates a cam 10 (or a crank, Fig. 7, not shown) to depress the free end of a tailpiece 15 forming part of arm q, whereupon c pivots about r to the Fig. 6 position whilst the lower tyre is ejected on its bead-ring 21 by further ascent of plunger 24, this plunger having a collar 32 that engages a shoulder 33 in a stem 22 that depends from bead-ring 21 and slides in a bore 23. The first upward movement of plunger 24 is effected by movement of a link 6 via link 30 and bell-crank lever 25, and the second upward movement by tailpiece 15 via link 27 and lever 25.
