Abstract

725,001. Holding and picking-up tools. MACGUINNESS, T. P. H. March 12, 1953 [May 16, 1952], No. 6840/53. Class 61 [Also in Group VI] An instrument primarily for gripping and extracting obstructions from the throats of animals comprises a tubular handle carrying gripping fingers at one end and operating means at the other. The tubular handle member 20, part of which 24 may be flexible, encloses a cable 16 and carries, at one end, a cylindrical head 29 which surrounds a block 32 secured to the cable 16. A plurality of fingers 36 are pivoted to both the tube 29 and block 32 so that relative longitudinal movement between these causes opening or closing of the fingers. The opposite end of the cable carries a block 9 which is capable of axial movement in a sleeve 3,.rotational movement being prevented by a screw 13 engaging a slot 14 in the block. The inner surface of the sleeve 3 is threaded for engagement with a member 6 which is rotated by a handle 1 and which communicates its resultant longitudinal movement to the block 9 by means of a key 10. Thus, when the handle 1 is turned, the axial movement of the cable 16 causes corresponding opening or closing of the jaws 36. In order to prevent damage to the throat, the jaws 36 are enclosed in a rubber sheath 42. In a modified type of jaw, see Fig. 7 (not shown), the tip is made adjustable so that it can be set as desired before the instrument is used.
