Abstract

718,830. Hose couplings; jointing tools. BOWDEN (ENGINEERS), Ltd. Feb. 3, 1953 [Feb. 4, 1952], No. 2951/52. Addition to 690,615. Class 99 (1). In a hose end fitting in which a number of indenting elements 12 are carried by a ferrule 5 and are pressed into a reinforced hose to clamp it against an insert 4, being retained in position by a sleeve 13, the ferrule is.located in a recess formed by baring or nearly baring the reinforcement 3. The indenters may be held during assembly by a coiled spring 17 engaging grooves 14. An annular groove 20 in the sleeve serves to indicate the length of the outer layer to be removed. A tool for applying the fitting comprises a pair of dies of which the lower is shown at 23, Fig. 6, each having a semicylindrical recess 26 having terminal shoulders 25, 25a and adapted to accommodate the sleeve 13. The lower die is mounted on a carriage comprising a pair of rods 32 connecting a pair of plates 34, 35, and an actuating screw 38. The sleeve is arranged adjacent the indenters 12 and located in the recess 26, the indenters being forced flush with the ferrule as the dies are brought together. A semi-annular shoulder 39a engages a groove 40, Fig. 2, in the ferrule. The screw 38 is then actuated to force the sleeve 13 over the indenters to the position shown in Fig. 2. A modification in which the fitting is assembled by rotation of the sleeve has six indenters 12 which project through holes 42, Fig. 11, in the sleeve 41 and are retained during assembly by a circlip 19 engaging slots 22 in the indenters. The sleeve has an internal recess 41a and a corresponding external projection 45, at least one of the indenters having a domed head adapted to engage the recess 41a after assembly. The assembling tool comprises a pair of dies 50 each having three plungers 51 adapted to engage the indenters, and a pair of pressure plates 52 having surfaces 55 engaging the plungers to depress the indenters clear of the sleeve. The hose and fitting are rotated to register the domed indenter with the recess 41a, the projection 45 being located between two of the plungers to prevent rotation of the sleeve. Specifications 540,490 and 640,140 are referred to.
