Abstract
718,406. Vinyl, resin-coated knitted fabrics; compound sheet material. CLAYTON, T. A. (United States Rubber Co.). July 11, 1952, No. 17481/52. Class 140. A composite stretchy upholstery material suitable as a leather substitute comprises a plain knit fabric with 35 courses per inch when it leaves the knitting machine, having a thermoplastic vinyl resin film 0.005 inch 0.030 inch thick bonded to one face, which has a stress of more than 10 lbs. per inch at 5 per cent elongation, and less than 35 lbs. per inch at 10 per cent elongation in the wales direction, and preferably, more than 5 lbs. per inch at 5 per cent elongation and less than 25 lbs. per inch at 15 per cent elongation in the courses direction. A Jersey net of yarns of cotton, nylon, rayon, polyacrylonitrile, or copolymer of acrylonitrile and vinyl chloride having the same number of rows longitudinally and transversely, and having yarns large enough to fill the fabric loops, is knitted on a circular machine, the resulting tube is slit and the edges sized. This net, under tension of 3-5 lbs. per inch width, so that the stretch is less than 15 per cent, is calender skim-coated on the back so that there is no undue penetration into the interstices. As shown, bank of resin R between rolls 13, 14 is calendered to sheet 5, which is reduced to the desired thickness by rolls 14, 15, and pressed on to net 10 by rolls 15, 16 adjusted to an opening of 0.045 inch. The net is pre-heated to 250-325‹ F. by passage over a heated drum before coating. Rolls 13, 14, 15 are heated to 300-350‹ F. and roll 16 to 250‹ F. The coated fabric may be printed and embossed under the same tension. The resin composition may be polyvinyl chloride plastisol with 50-80 parts plasticizer, e.g. dibutyl phthalate, with or without a non-migrating polyester plasticizer, and stabilizer, filler, and pigment. The polyvinyl chloride may be substituted by a copolymer of vinyl chloride with vinyl acetate, vinylidene chloride, or diethyl maleate, or polyvinylidene chloride, or a combination thereof. The resin may be applied, however, as a fluid organosol by roll and doctor knife, or reverse roll coater, or a resin film separately prepared by calendering or casting may be adhered to the fabric, which may be adhesive-coated by passage through doubling tolls in the heated state.
