Abstract
Weakly basic anion-exchange resins containing polar amino groups are prepared by reacting ammonia or a primary or secondary amine with an insoluble cross-linked copolymer of a glycidyl ester having the general formula <FORM:0718168/IV (a)/1> in which R represents hydrogen, chlorine, or an alkyl group containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms, such as the glycidyl esters of acrylic, chloroacrylic, methacrylic, ethacrylic, propylacrylic, and butylacrylic acids, with a cross-linking agent containing a plurality of non-conjugated vinylidene groups, such as divinyl benzene and naphthalene, trivinyl benzene and naphthalene, polyvinyl anthracenes, diallyl phthalate, succinate, and maleate, and divinyl sebacate. The use is described of a terpolymer of glycidyl methacrylate, divinyl benzene, and ethyl styrene. Amines specified are methylamine, dimethylamine, n-butylamine, iso-butylamine, dibutylamines, diethylenetriamine, triethylenetetramine, tetraethylenepentamine, propylenediamine, cyclohexylamine, dicyclohexylamine, aniline, methylaniline, benzylaniline, ortho-, meta-, and para-toluidines, xylidines, benzidine, alpha- and beta-naphthylamines, benzylamine, dibenzylamine, phenylenediamine, and benzylethylamine. The reaction of the copolymers with ammonia or amines is preferably carried out at elevated temperatures in a liquid medium such as water, an alcohol, dioxane, or toluene, with the aid of a catalyst such as hydrochloric and sulphuric acids, trimethylamine hydrochloride, or benzyltrimethylammonium chloride.
