Abstract

717,699. Ground anchors. MASTS, Ltd. Nov. 5, 1951, No. 25877/51. Class 45 Relates to a concrete base unit 1, Fig. 3, in combination with a tapering tubular metal pole wherein the external surface at one end of the base unit has a taper which conforms to the taper of the internal surface of the lower end of the pole or lowermost pole section 3 in the case of a pole constructed in sections and which provides sufficient strength to support the pole in an upright position when the other end of the base unit is planted in a supporting surface with the base unit upright. The base unit may be hollow or solid and has longitudinal re-inforcing rods 2; which may be spaced symmetrically around the periphery or when the pole is for carrying overhead wires, they may be arranged in two groups to give the base unit more strength transversely to the overhead wires. When a circular section is used with the latter arrangement of re-inforcing wires the position of the re-inforcing wires may be indicated as shown in Fig. 12 by providing two diametrically opposed longitudinal grooves on the external surface of the base unit. These grooves may also be used as drainage channels for any moisture which accumulates in the pole. When the base unit is hollow a door may be provided to give access to the interior so that it may be used as an instrument chamber. When a solid base unit is used, a longitudinal hole 15, Fig. 13, extending from the top of the unit to a transverse aperture 16, may be provided to take a wire rope from a winch so that the pole may be hauled in place on the unit. This hole 15 may also serve as a drainage channel and for introducing electric cables into the interior of the pole. Alternate tapers 5, 5a, Fig. 13, may be provided at the top of the unit to take different size poles. Specification 426,074, [Group X], is referred to.
