Abstract
717,373. Batteries. AKTIEBOLAGET TUDOR. July 7, 1952, [March 4, 1952.] No. 17080/52. Class 53. An accumulator is provided with a separator consisting of three layers 1, 2, 3 of glass fibres, the middle layer 2 being felted and being of finer texture than the outer layers which abut under pressure against the adjacent electrodes. The middle layer is free from any binding material while the outer layers may be held together by polystyrene or other binder. A temporary binder such as starch may be used with the middle layer to assist felting, the starch being removed subsequently by the acid of the accumulator. The edges of the three layers may be joined together by a thermoplastic material such as asphalt, polystyrene or polythene. The plates of the accumulator are of grid form, the frames and cross bars having circular cross sections. The frames may be coated with polythene or other plastic material and the lower edges of the plates may be covered with insulating tape to prevent short-circuiting by material deposited on the bottom of the accumulator. For the same purpose the middle layers of the separators on both sides of a plate may be extended beneath the plate as shown at 14 in Fig. 6, these extended horizontal portions being impregnated with a binding material.
