Class 78 (1) [Also in Group VIII] In a machine for folding laundered articles, the articles are transferred from a first conveyer 10 to a second conveyer 12 arranged at a lower level than conveyer 10 and running transversely to it; articles are received from conveyer 10 'by a platform lying substantially in the plane of the upper run of conveyer 10 and above conveyer 12, and the platform is formed of two plates 14 which can move away from each other to provide a gap through which the article will fall on to conveyer 12. When the leading edge of an article 16 on conveyer 10 raises an arm 26, a solenoid 24 is energized to swing plates 14 up about pivots 18 to the article-supporting position. When the passing of the trailing edge of the article allows arm 26 to fall, the solenoid is de-energized after a suitable delay, and plates 14 swing down to let the article fall on to conveyer 12. Fingers 36 between the tapes of conveyer 10 bridge the gap between the conveyer and the platform. The platform may be horizontal or may slope slightly upwardly or downwardly from conveyer 10. Plates 14, instead of swinging, may move towards and away from each other in a horizontal plane. As shown, conveyer 12 lies at right angles to conveyer 10; according to the Provisional Specification, the two conveyers may be arranged at some other angle, e.g. 45 degrees.
