Abstract

714,621. Magnetic recording and reproducing apparatus. ARMOUR RESEARCH FOUNDATION OF ILLINOIS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY. Feb. 1, 1952, No. 2730/52. Class 40 (2). In a magnetic transducing apparatus for disc records the transducer 108 is carried by a hinged cover 11 and is brought into contact with record on a turntable 14 when the cover 11 is in the closed position. The transducer 108 is made to traverse the surface of the record by means of a leadscrew 96 which moves the transducer carriage 106 when a mechanical coupling between the leadscrew 96 and the turntable 14 is established upon the closing of the cover 14. The coupling takes the form of a one-to-one ratio worm gearing 99, a shaft 101 which enters a circular recess 105 in the central hub 15 of the turntable 14, and a pin 16 on the hub 15 which engages a radial pin 104 on the shaft 101. The carriage 106 is coupled to the leadscrew 96 by means of a spring-loaded tongue 114, Fig. 7, mounted on the carriage 106. When is it desired to traverse'the carriage manually, the tongue 114 may be disengaged from the leadscrew 96 by means of a lever 112, Fig. 6, whose end is terminated by an indicator 36, Fig. 3, on the outside of the cover 11. To carry out the operation the indicator 36 is merely pressed and then moved along an indexing card 34. As the leadscrews performs exactly one revolution to each revolution of the turntable, the transducer will always register correctly with a turn of the recorder track on the record disc which is itself accurately angularly located on the turntable 14 by means of a pin 18 thereon which engages a perforation in the record disc. The record disc comprises a base of paper, plastic or metal liaving a central aperture for engaging the hub 15 of the turntable 14, and has a magnetisable coating on each side. A clip at the centre or at the outer edge provides a convenient means for fastening the index card 34 associated with a particular record.
