Abstract

Aromatic compounds consisting of a benzene ring containing not more than 3 substituents, including not more than 2 NO2 groups, not more than 2 carbonyl halide radicals, not more than 2 hydrocarbonoxy groups where the hydrocarbon is free of ethylenic or acetylenic unsaturation, not more than 2 phenyl and not more than 3 chlorine or bromine atoms, are brominated in an anhydrous system with a mixture of bromine and chlorine in the ratio of 0.7 to 1.3 mols. to 1 mol. Practically no chlorination occurs, the chlorine present being converted into HCl. Ring bromination catalysts may be employed. Mono- or di-bromo-products are obtained. In examples the bromination of nitrobenzene, 2-chloro-4-nitrotoluene, benzoyl chloride, anisole, toluene and 4-nitrodiphenyl is described.
