Abstract
712,692. Supporting and mounting bearings. ROLLS-ROYCE, Ltd. Feb. 14, 1952 [Feb. 26, 1951], No. 4698/51. Class 12(1) A bearing race 14 is mounted in a supporting structure 11, having a coefficient of thermal expansion greater than that of the race 14, by means of a sleeve 17 made of material having a high yield point and having a fitting engagement with the exterior of the bearing race at one end and an interference fit with the housing wall 11a at the other end, so that satisfactory centralization of the bearing is achieved over a substantial range of operating temperatures. A strengthening ring 18 having an interference fit with the sleeve 17 is secured to the housing 11 by bolts 16 which also pass through clearance holes in a bolting flange 14a on the race 14 thereby locating, the latter axially. The ends of the sleeve 17 have lands 17a, 17b. In a modification. Fig. 2, a sleeve 24 has an inwardly thickened end 24a, and the wall of the supporting structure is stepped; also the bolting flange 14a is clamped between casing parts 21, 22. fn a further modification, Fig. 3, internal lands 25a, 25b are provided on a sleeve 25, the land 25b having an interference fit with a ring 26 which is recessed at its outer edge to accommodate a flange 25c on the sleeve 25. In the above embodiments the sleeve is of high tensile steel and thus has a coefficient of thermal expansion similar to that of the outer race, but alternatively the sleeve may be made of metal having a coefficient of thermal expansion similar to that of the housing, in which case the interference fit will be provided between the sleeve and the bearing outer race.
