[Also in Group V] In making capsules by forming pockets in a sheet of gelatine &c., filling the pockets and sealing them with another sheet, the filling is performed by nozzles which are initially inserted into the pockets beneath the upper edge of the pocket (Fig. 8), then discharge a measured amount of filler material into the pockets, and are then withdrawn (Fig. 11). As shown in Fig. 4 the pockets 79 are formed by sucking a sheet 28 of getlatine into cavities 36 in a rotating roll 21. The cavities 36 are arranged in circumferential and axial rows, as shown in Fig. 3, and there is one nozzle 62 for each circumferential row. The nozzles are in two sets A, B, which dip and rise alternately; when one set is lowered into an axial row of pockets 79 to fill it, the other set is raised and inactive. The nozzles are mounted for dipping on a fixed fulcrum pin 35, and are rocked about this pin by a cam 50, Fig. 1, acting through cam follower 49, crank 48, shaft 46, rocking beam 45, pull rods 42 and tongues 37, 38 extending from the rear of each nozzle. As each set of nozzles dips into an axial row of pockets 79 a measured quantity of material is delivered under pressure through pipes 33 and the nozzles into the pockets by means of pump pistons in a pump 32. When the nozzles rise the supply of material is cut off. Each nozzle includes a spring-urged ball valve 67.
