Abstract
707,041. Handrails. POWER UTILITIES, Ltd., and HOLLANDS, H. W. Nov. 6, 1950 (Nov. 5, 1949; Feb. 17, 1950], Nos. 28367/49 and 4063/50. Class 45. [Also in Groups XXII and XXVIII] The stanchions 10 of a railing structure are connected to at least one line of longitudinal tubular rails 18 by means of spigots 22 on the stanchions, the spigots extending inside the rails and each being tormed on or secured to a wider base element 13 abutting the end of the rail and whose cross-sectional shape and dimensions conform at the position where it meets the rail to those of the outer surface of the rail, the base element merging smoothly into the upright portion of the stanchion, the rails being retained in position by welding portions of them to the base elements or spigots. The plane of the abutting faces of the rail and element 13 may either be perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the rail or if it is desired to fit the rail after the stanchions are in position the element 13 at one end of the rail may have an oblique end face 24 from which part of a cylindrical spigot 23 projects. The end 2 of the rail is formed in a corresponding oblique manner and consequently the rail may be positioned by a lateral movement. After assembly the rails are tack welded at four points at each end to the elements 13, any roughness being subsequently ground away. Instead of the spigot being integral with the fitting it may be in the form of a tube. The top rail may be secured by similar spigot joints or alternatively the top of the 'stanchion may have a cradle 16 which is attached to the rail by a bead or fillet of welding along the edges 30 and 31. The stanchions comprise tubes 11, 12 to which the fittings 13, 16 and a footing 14 are attached by flash-butt welding. The fittings and footing are recessed as indicated at 25 and 27 to facilitate the welding. The second Provisional Specification states that the intermediate rails may be flash-butt welded to the stanchions. Specification 707,129 is referred to.
