Class 108(3) [Also in Group XXIV] The yielding movements of some or all of a number of helical cushioning .springs 13 arranged in notches in the hub flange 11 of a clutch plate are damped by the frictional engagement of radiallycompressed C-section sleeve springs 16 with the hubs of cupped buttons 14 enclosing the spring ends. Two flanged cover plates receive the springs 13 in embossed pockets 30 and are riveted at 22 to two series of segments 23, 24 arranged in two planes and carrying friction rings 25, 27. Leaf springs 29 riveted to the segments 23 overlap the segments 24 to provide a '' mush " clutching effect. Sealing rings -32 are provided and, though the springs may operate dry, if oil or grease is employed for lubrication and sound deadening the cover plates are seam welded at 33. In a modification enlarged damping sleeves surround the springs 13 and frictionally grip the flanges of their end buttons. In a further modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the buttons are of sintered lubricant - absorbing metal and are spherically domed to rock on arcuate ends of the notches in the flange 11. The spaced edges of a damping sleeve may be flanged along their length or urged apart by an interposed strip of neoprene rubber or by a wavy spring.
