Abstract

705,891. Dolphins. DEUTSCHE MANNESMANNROHREN WERKE AKT.-GES. May 30, 1952 [May 30, 1951; Aug. 1, 1951; Nov. 12, 1951], No. 13863/52. Class 68(2) A steel dolphin comprising one tube, or a number of tube sections rigidly connected together, e.g. by welding, is constructed so that the strength of the dolphin varies in different longitudinal regions to correspond with the bending stresses which differ along the length of the pile when in use. The dolphin may consist of two tubular sections having different properties, i.e. yield points, or, material of the same quality may be used throughout the length of the dolphin in which case the section of the dolphin which is subjected to the greater mechanical stress is given a heat treatment. A dolphin, Fig. 2, has a lower section 1 whose wall thickness decreases and whose diameter increases, from the top downwards, and an upper section 2 which is butt welded to the section 1 and has a smaller wall thickness than the upper end of the lower tube 1. Figs. 3, 4 shows alternative joining arrangements. The tube lengths 1, 2, 1', 2<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 5, connected by welding seams 3 and cylindrical portions 4, have the same internal diameter, the external diameter of the lengths increasing from the top downwards. In an alternative arrangement the cylindrical portions 4 are placed on the outside of the dolphin which is of constant external diameter the internal diameters of the lengths decreasing from the top downwards.
