Abstract
705,588. Separating liquids from gases. BRISTOL AEROPLANE CO., Ltd. Nov. 16, 1951 [Nov. 28, 1950], No. 29131/50. Class 123(3) A method of separating a liquid from a gas in which the liquid is finely dispersed, e.g. water from air, comprises passing, a stream of the dispersion through tortuous pore-passages to cause coalescence of the water into droplets, and then separating the droplets from the air by inertia and/ or density effects, i.e. by means of baffles, and/or centrifugal means or gravity. Air containing finely dispersed water enters the apparatus by a manifold 2 and is delivered to seventeen porous tubes 15 vertically arranged between annular plates 5 and 19. Inner and outer cylindrical gauze screens 25, 26 are arranged adjacent the tubes 15, which may be e.g. of sintered bronze or stainless steel, or glass: or ether vitreous material or several layers of gauze. The gauze 25, 26 acts to separate out the droplets formed when the dispersion is passed through the tubes 15. A cylindrical casing 9, with an outlet 27 for the air and a drain 14 for the water, completes the apparatus. Various modifications are described. The gauze screens may be replaced by a centrifuge, or the apparatus may comprise simply a horizontal porous diaphragm in a conduit with two gauze screens on its downstream side. In a further modification, Fig. 8, the dispersion is passed through a porous diaphragm 53 disposed zig-zag fashion in a casing 9, the droplets being removed by a plurality of gauze screens 56, or by rods or tubes, 27 and 14 being the air and water outlets respectively.
