Abstract

701,912. Annealing. OLIN INDUSTRIES, Inc. Nov. 23, 1950 [Nov. 30, 1949], No. 28657/50. Class 72 Iron shot composed of substantially pure iron and having a surface hardness of 60-100 D.P.H. and an interior hardness not less than the surface hardness is produced by heating the shot above 1670‹F. but below its melting point and maintaining an atmosphere of hydrogen around the shot during heating, holding at the high temperature and cooling. The grain size of the iron, which should not contain more than 0.145 per cent. of impurities may be larger than A.S.T.M. size 2. As shown, the shot may be introduced into a rotary retort 7 having internal flanges for showering the shot and means for maintaining a steady flow of dry hydrogen therethrough, The retort is then rotated by the motor 19. The air in the retort is removed by nitrogen which is in turn replaced by a steady flow of dry hydrogen. The retort is then moved into a furnace 2 at a temperature of 1675-1800‹F. and held there until the shot has reached the desired hardness and grain size, after which it is withdrawn and allowed to cool while still rotating and being supplied with dry hydrogen.
