Abstract

700,927. Addressing machines ; printing surface. ADDRESSOGRAPH - MULTIGRAPH CORPORATION. May 8, 1951, No. 10812/51. Classes 100 (2) and 100 (4) Addressing machines.-A printing apparatus (Fig. 1) for use in connection with a printing plate 10 (Fig. 3) having two sets of upstanding printing characters, the characters of one set (e.g. 17, 17a) being upside down with respect to those of the other set (e.g. 18, 18a) whilst reading in the same direction, comprises a frame 30 having an anvil 20 to support the printing plate, a platen 23 mounted in said frame for movement to and from the printing plate to effect imprints on a work sheet W, an ink ribbon 21 carried on the frame and extending above and parallel with one of the sets (17, 17a) of the characters on the printing plate 10, a second ink ribbon 22 substantially parallel with the ribbon 21 and carried on the platen 23 whereby the work sheet may be positioned to extend over both sets of characters on the printing plate but over the ribbon 21 and under the ribbon 22, means being provided to press the platen 23 and its associated ink ribbon 22 against the work sheet W to effect imprints on opposite sides thereof. The individual plates are carried from a magazine 25 along a guideway 33 to the printing position by lugs 40 on feed chains 35 which are driven by a sprocket 36, movement of the platen 23 and of the plate feed chains being imparted by rotation of a power shaft 31 which may be rotated by any suitable mechanism such as that shown in Specification 496,042. The ribbons 21, 22 are periodically advanced after each printing operation to bring fresh portions thereof into the printing area. The imprint on the work sheet is secured by the stamping or printing pressure of the platen causing the ribbon 21 to print the characters in the rows 17, 17a of the printing plate on the underside of the work sheet. At the same time the work sheet is embossed from the underside by the characters in the rows 18, 18a of the printing plate and printing of these rows of characters is effected on the upper surface of the work sheet by the ribbon 22. The embossing action of the platen may be accentuated by so embossing the characters of the rows 18, 18a that they stand a little higher than those of the rows 17, 17a or the platen may be slightly thicker in the area which coacts with the rows 18, 18a so that it is a little closer to the printing plate than the area thereof which co-acts with the rows 17, 17a. The platen may be undercut to prevent contact by the ribbon 22 with areas of the work sheet W, other than those overlying the characters 18, 18a. Printing surfaces.-The individual printing plates may comprise either single strips of material suitably embossed to provide raised printing characters or they may comprise as shown in Fig. 3 a frame or holder 10 carrying one or more embossed printing plates 11, 12 and 13 and if desired an index card 14 such a plate and frame being shown, e.g. in Specification 477,074. The rows 17, 17a of characters in the plates 11, 12 of Fig. 3 however are upside down with respect to the rows 18, 18a of characters in the plates 12, 13 whilst reading in the same direction.
