700,268. Magnetic sound recording and reproducing apparatus. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Jan. 14, 1952 [Jan. 17, 1951], No. 1030/52. Class 40 (2). A magnetic recording head to which a high frequency bias current is applied has a copper strip 19 to cause the bias field the strength of which is represented by the line 21 to decline more rapidly than the audio frequency field represented by the line 20. The strip is greater in thickness than the penetration depth of the H.F. field and not so thick as the penetration depth of the audio frequency field. The head may be made of ferrite material known as " Ferroxcube." It is stated that with a magnetic head constructed according to the present invention, the adjustment of the strength of the high frequency field is not critical, and it may be so chosen that a separate erasing head may be dispensed with. Where the record is in the form of a wire, the strip 19 is replaced by a cylindrical member.
