Abstract
698,966. Plate heat-exchangers ; surface condensers ; film heat-exchangers for cooling liquid. CHLOBERAG CHLOR BETRIEB RHEINFELDEN AKT.-GES. May 4, 1951 [Dec. 23, 1948], No. 10563/51. Class 64 (iii) [Also in Group XII] In an arrangement in which liquids, gases or vapours having a corrosive or etching action, e.g. hydrogen chloride or chlorinated organic solvents, are cooled or condensed or such a gas is absorbed (see Group XII), hollow elements of graphite (or pressed thermosetting or thermoplastic synthetic material containing graphite) are assembled to form a column. Lenticular hollow elements 11 are interconnected by nipples 12, also of graphite &c., each axially bored but closed at one end adjacent lateral outlets 13 through which fluid flows from the bore radially into the next element. As shown in Fig. 1 liquid or gas to be cooled flows upwards through the column which is located in a vessel 14 containing cooling liquid such as water. A medium to be cooled, such as a liquid, may flow down outside the column through the vessel 14 and be cooled by a liquid, which may flow upwardly, inside the column. If the treated liquid is to flow in a thin layer over the column for cooling, e.g. while absorbing gas, it is collected and distributed by channels 35, Fig. 3a, any gas for absorption flowing up or down the inside of the vessel 14. The vessel 14 may be rubber lined or made of material to resist corrosive gases. For condensing a vapour flowing down inside the column, by means of a cooling liquid in the vessel 14, lenticular elements shaped as in Fig. 2a are used so that condensate is directed to the axis of the column and the nipples 12 are arranged in reverse manner, i.e. with closed ends lowermost. In Fig. 3b is shown a modified connecting nipple. A number of columns may be arranged in one cooling vessel and may be located vertically or horizontally in tanks through which cold water flows ; they may be in assemblies in parallel or in series. The nipples 12 are screwed or cemented into the lenticular elements 11 or fitted with conical locating surfaces. The elements are circular or polygonal in cross section.
