Abstract

698,874. Electrostatic filters. POWER JETS (RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT), Ltd. Jan. 26, 1951 [Feb. 9, 1950], No. 3386/50. Class 39(i) Apparatus for electrostatically precipitating charged suspended particles from a fast-moving gas stream comprises an elongated casing having an inlet duct 1, Fig. 1, and an outlet duct 3, and a porous partition 2 through which the gas flows in a direction normal to the general direction of flow; the area of the porous partition is large compared with the cross-sectional area of the inlet duct so that the speed of gas flow through the partition is low compared to that of the longitudinal gas flow. A non-discharging electrostatic field is established between the partition and the opposite wall 5 of the inlet duct which forms the particle collecting surface. As shown in Fig. 2 the partition 8 is conical in a similarly shaped casing. A wire 10, forming a discharge electrode for charging the particles passes down the middle of the inlet duct 6, and is attached to the apex of the conical partition 8 through an insulator 11. The unit may be of cylindrical form or hexagonal in cross-section, and several units may be arranged in parallel. The porous partition may consist of gauze which may be backed by steel wool, or of perforated or porous metal sheet. The porosity of the partition preferably decreases from the inlet to the outlet end of the casing. According to the Provisional Specification the unit may be of flattened cylindrical form, and a number of discharge wire electrodes are provided. Further, the direction of gas flow may be reversed, a discharge wire or plate electrode being provided down the centre of the unit.
