Abstract

698,750. Centrifugal machines. LOESSL, O. VON. March 28, 1951, No. 7149/51. Class 23 In a continuously operating centrifuge, for the treatment of sugar, comprising a rotary cylindrical or conical, filter ter drum 1 containing a differentially rotating discharge apparatus 5a, 5d, the discharge apparatus has knives or paddles 5c which are formed with means for conveying a cleaning agent to the filter drum and are disposed along a helical curve in order to impart a rolling or tumbling action to the material being centrifuged as it passes from one knife or paddle to the next. The paddles are mounted on holders 5b which are assembled on a disc 5c carrying bolts 5f and rollers 5e engaging the filter drum. The filter drum and the discharge apparatus are driven by a member 4 through gearing 2, 3, and gearing 6, 7 respectively. The discharge apparatus is supplied with grain to be treated at 9 and a covering agent such as syrup or water and steam through pipes 10. The cleansing agent is supplied to the drum through pipes 11, 12, ports 13 and pipes which are formed in the paddles 5c and terminate in jets. The cross-sectional area of the ports 13 increases with the increased distance from the inlet pipe 12. Alternatively each port 13 is supplied through an individual pipe or a paddle holder 5b of semi-circular cross-section is subdivided by walls to form separate conduits therefor. Separated sugar is lifted up by the paddles, cleaned with fresh water and then axially discharged. The used covering and rinsing agents are separated into cloudy and clear flow which is discharged through vertically adjustable gutters 15, 16 superimposed one above the other. In a modification, the filter is cleaned by the covering agent which infiltrates into the pipe 5b through ports therein. In a further modification the centrifuged material is discharged downwardly into a solution vessel which supports the centrifuge and has a stirrer driven by the shaft 6.
