Abstract

696,397. Coating webs. CONSOLIDATED WATER POWER & PAPER CO. June 25, 1951. [Aug. 12, 1950] No. 15014/51. Class 140. [Also in Group XXIV] An apparatus for uniformly distributing a liquid coating suspension along the length of a nip between two gate rolls 1, 2 of a coating machine which comprises a track disposed substantially parallel to the length of the gate rolls, a carrier 22 positioned upon the track for movement thereon, means disposed adjacent and parallel to the track for moving the carrier forwardly and backwardly on the track, means for driving the carrier-moving means, and a coating material conduit 102 mounted upon the carrier having its discharge end 105 disposed above the nip to discharge coating material into the nip when the carrier is moved. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2 a source of coating material under pressure is connected to a pipe 102 carried by a carrier 22 which through chain and gear mechanism (see Group XXIV) driven by a motor 62 is caused to move too and fro parallel to the longitudinal axis of the gate rolls distributing the coating material into the nip 6 between the rolls, one of which is in contact with a distributing roll 9 of the coating machine. In a modification shown in Fig. 7, a beam 113 disposed relative to the gate rolls (not shown) is provided with a double threaded screw member 118 driven through gears 124, 125 and a chain 128 and around which is a carrier member 130 carrying the tube 143 for distributing the coating material which carrier on rotation of the screw is caused to move longitudinally along the screw.
