Abstract

696,085. Engine cooling systems; heating vehicles. DAIMLER-BENZ AKT.-GES. Feb. 5, 1951 [Feb. 4, 1950], No. 2742/51. Classes 64 (ii) and 64 (iii) Relates to liquid cooling systems for internal combustion engines having the normal radiator, a by-pass short-circuiting the radiator, and in addition a heating device which takes up heat from the engine coolant and gives up such heat for example to warm the interior of the vehicle. According to the invention, temperature regulating means is provided comprising a single thermostatic control device whereby the heating device together with the radiator is cut off from the cooling-liquid circuit when the engine is cold, and with rising temperature of the engine coolant liquid, this liquid is first admitted to the heating device and only thereafter to the radiator. In the form shown, the control device comprises a hollow slide valve g actuated by a thermostat c. Fig. 1 shows the position of the valve when the engine is cold. Engine coolant enters the valve chamber b through the passage a and flows through the tubular valve g to the chamber b2 and thence to the by-pass f for return to the engine. In this position the passages d, e, leading respectively to the heating device and radiator are closed by the slide valve g. On a rise in temperature of the engine coolant the thermostat c commences to lift the valve g and hot coolant fluid from the engine is allowed to flow through the passage d to the heating device (e.g. vehicle heater). On a further rise in the temperature of the engine coolant the valve opens the passage e allowing some of the coolant to flow to the vehicle radiator, and at the same time the by-pass f is closed. In alternative arrangements, the by-pass f may be closed when the passage d to the heating device is opened or by the by-pass f may be wholly or partially closed when the engine is cold, so that little or no circulation of coolant can take place until the engine has warmed up. A poppet type valve may be used instead of the slide valve shown.
