Abstract

Class 94(i) A method of producing sealed packets of tea or other dry goods of a freely flowing nature comprises folding a wrapper round a former to produce a packet open at one end and closed at the other, fining the packet and closing the packet by folding the wrapper over the open end and is characterised in that a gummed label is folded at the same time as the wrapper so that when the latter is folded over the open end, that end is sealed by the label. A gummed label 20, Fig. 2, is laid, gummed face up, along plates 22, 23, 24, 25 hinged end to end and carried by a yoke 42, Fig. 8, through the medium of a spring 40 interposed between the yoke and the plate 23. A wrapper is then laid over the label and over side plates 26, 27 slidably mounted in the yoke 42. A former carrier 14, pivotally mounted at 30, is then moved down by a handle 45 to bring a former 33, magnetically held to said carrier, on to the wrapper between the side plates 26, 27, a pivoted gummer 38 normally resting in a gum bath 39 being moved by the carrier 14 to deposit gum along one edge 18a of the wrapper. A stop- 44 limits the downward movement of the carrier 14 as the former 33 begins to depress the plates 22, 23, 24, 25 against the spring 40, the operator then releases the former 33 from its carrier 14. returns the carrier, and continues the depression of the former by hand so that the wrapper is folded up into a V about the sides thereof, a catch 46 holding the plate 23 in its depressed position. A main cam shaft 16 is then rotated one revolution by a handle 50 to effect the further folding operations. Cams 51, 52 move the plates 26, 27 one after the other to fold the upstanding portions of the wrapper on to the top of the former 33, Fig. 4, the plate 27 being held in its inner position by a pivoted catch. A cam 53 then moves a pivoted arm 87, Figs. 1, 7, carrying a folder 80 along its pivot shaft 88 until the folder 80 is positioned above the end of the former 33, whereupon a cam 54 moves the arm 87 down so that the folder 80 folds the upper end extension 18c, Fig. 4, of the wrapper down on to the end face of the former. The arm 87 also carries a spring-mounted pin 103 which holds the wrapper firmly down on to the gummed label while cams 55, 56 swing first a pivoted folder plate 81, then a pivoted folder plate 82, to fold the side extensions 18d, 18e of the wrapper on to the end of the former, the folders 80, 81, 82 then being retracted by springs. The folders 81, 82 are mounted on shafts 111 journaled in the yoke 42. Cams 57, 58 freely mounted on the shaft 16 are rotated, after the above operations have been performed, by a clutch 120. The yoke 42, carrying the plates 22-27, 81 and 82, is mounted on trunnions 117 journaled in a frame 118, Fig. 8 and is turned through 90 degrees by the cam 57 to bring the former 33 to an upright position, the catch of the plate 27 being released during the later part of such movement so that the plate 27 is retracted. The cam 58 turns an arm 133, Figs. 4, 5 to erect the plate 25 against the side of the former to complete the end fold and to press the extending portion of the gummed label along the side of the packet. The packet is then filled, the former being removed or left to act as a funnel, while solenoids 136, Fig. 8, jolt the frame 118, carrying the yoke 42, up and down on springs 135. The open end of the filled packet is closed by hand. A button 137, Fig. 7, is then pressed to disengage the clutch 120 to release the cams 57, 58 and the yoke 42 is returned to its original position by a spring or a handle 143, Fig. 1. The packet is then removed. The plates 26, 27 may be fixed, relative to the yoke 42, and the upstanding portions of the wrapper folded over by hand. The label may be of a length to cover only one long side. and the two ends of the package. The end hinged plate 22 may be dispensed with.
