695,912. Audible. and like signalling apparatus. TELEFUNKEN GES. FUR DRAHTLOSE TELEGRAPHIE. May 31, 1951 [Oct. 1, 1948], No. 12844/51. Class 118 (ii). A public address or like sound radiating system comprises a' plurality of similar type hornless loudspeakers b all of which are arranged in a straight line along a narrow hornless baffle a with their diaphragms arranged so as to radiate sound through apertures in the baffle and with their axes substantially normal to the baffle, said baffle being disposed so that the line of loudspeakers is substantially vertical whereby sound is radiated mainly horizontally. The relationship between the length of baffle and the reverberation time of an auditorium is discussed. The loudspeakers at the ends of the line may be fed only with the low frequency end of the audioband. Some of the loudspeakers may be boxed in at the back as at c giving a resultant cardioid polar diagram in the horizontal plane. A circular polar diagram may be obtained by placing two of the former systems together such that the longitudinal edges of the baffles are parallel and their surfaces lie in mutally perpendiculai planes; the loudspeakers on the respective baffles may be relatively staggered. Microphones for the system may also be arranged in a vertical stack and various reverberation effects may be obtained by simply switching individual microphones into or out of circuit. U.S.A.
