Abstract

693,346. Magnetic recording and reproducing apparatus. INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Feb. 1, 1952. No. 2728/52. Class 40 (ii). A magnetic transducer head assembly comprises a number of heads; the; pole-pieces of each succeeding head being narrower than that of the previous head. In the embodiment described with reference'to Fig. 1, a construction is shown for recording two pairs of bi-aural tracks. The recording heads 12, 13 are in staggered relationship to each other, and the erasing head has poletips wider than those of both the recording heads together. The non-magnetic casing 14 is provided with a shoulder 31 to act as a guide enabling the tape to be accurately registered, one pair of tracks being recorded while the tape is travelling in one direction, and the other pair of tracks being recorded while the tape is travelling in the opposite direction. Strips 23, 24, 25 of high permeability material are embedded in the casing 14 to prevent cross-talk and pick-up between adjacent channels.
