691,921. Drawing. BOLTON & SONS, Ltd., T. May 23, 1951 [May 26, 1950], No. 13240/50. Class 83 (iv). In a tube or bar drawing machine the work is fed to the dies or to a push pointer by gripping jaws. A pair of gripping jaws 17 for feeding tubular work to a push pointer are mounted on a cross-head 11 on the forward end of a guide tube 12 sliding in a fixed sleeve 13 forming part of the back bench. The jaws 17 are interconnected by toothed quadrants 16 and the upper jaw is actuated through an arm 14 by a hydraulic or pneumatic ram 22. The cross-head 11 is guided by rods 24, 27 sliding in fixed brackets 23, 25, and forward movement of the cross-head 11 is resisted by an adjustable friction gripper 26 engaging the guide rod 27 and controlling the pressure with which the grippers 17 engage the work. Movement of the arm 14 is limited by a stop 19 and the closure of the grippers is limited by a stop 18 to prevent distortion of thin-walled tubes. In operation, the initial movement of the ram 22 moves the jaws 17 to grip the work and then advances the jaws to feed the work. The jaws 17 may have interchangeable grippers for different sizes of tubes, and several sets may be assembled together for feeding a number of tubes simultaneously.
