Garments are steamed and pressed on a bust 1 without a rigid back part, the bust including a rigid front wall 3 having openings for the passage of steam and air, a transverse partition wall 4 substantially vertically disposed in the middle region of the bust, permeable covering 5 surrounding the bust so as to form front and back chambers 6, 7, and means for producing different and variable effective pressure on the back and front of a garment applied to the bust. A small extension 2 may be provided as a shoulder support and this may also be perforated. Arm holes 10 are provided with bag-like arm parts (not shown). Steam is supplied to both chambers 6, 7, through a duct 16 having a pedal operated valve 21 but the increased resistance of the perforated wall 3 and a felt lining 23 causes the back part 811 of the garment to be blown out strongly while the front 81 is only steamed without being distorted. After the steaming operation hot air is blown into chamber 6 and suction applied to chamber 7 Fig. 2, (not shown). Finally air is blown into both chambers 6, 7, simultaneously for a short period Fig. 3, (not shown). Figs. 1 - 3 show busts for jackets and short coats, while the bust 12 in Fig. 4 can be used for full length coats as well by opening pedal operated valves 22 to bring additional chambers 6<SP>1</SP>, 7<SP>1</SP> into use. The busts 1 and 12 are detachably mounted on stands 15 for ready interchange with busts of different sizes.
