Class 20(iv) The opposed surfaces of a joint intermediate the points of support of precast reinforced concrete structural members are arranged in end to end pressure relationship, transmitting the compressive stresses resulting from the normal bending, shearing or torsion forces acting at the joint and steel reinforcements are joined together coaxially to take up tensile stresses, the abutting forces of the webs are at right angles to the central plane of the members and of zig-zag or wave-like shape for taking up transverse forces, or if flat are indented to take up compressive stresses resulting from sheering forces at the joint. The abutting ends of two parts of a T- section reinforced concrete girder are perpendicular to the central plane; the face of the top boom a may be inclined or dovetailed, that of the web b of zig-zag or other indented shape and the concrete in the bottom boom c is omitted from either or both parts to expose the reinforcement bars 8 for interconnection. The rod ends may be formed respectively with right and left screw threads and screwed into a coupling member 10, or with bored ends into which a coupling rod is screwed. Loosening of coupling may be prevented by split pins or grouting. A coupling nut in the form of a box having two hinged parts locked in closed position by pins may be made to connect adjacent reinforcements, the ends of which are almost in contact.
