Abstract
688,226. Windscreens; draught excluders. WILLYS-OVERLAND MOTORS, Inc. Sept. 25, 1950 [Sept. 27, 1949], No. 23416/50. Class 20(iii) [Also in Group XXXII] A vehicle body is provided with a channel-sectioned member adapted to engage a slidably inserted beaded edge or ridge of a flexible fabric door panel extension or folding top. The upper edge of the door 15, Fig. 4, is aligned with the belt line of the body 12, and secured to the door is a window frame 28 which comprises upwardly extending members 29, 30 and crossmembers 31, 32. The cross-members are provided with brackets 33, 34, which accommodate hinge pintles 35, 36, of a frame 38 supporting a glazed panel 42, which panel contacts rubber weather sealing grommets 45, Fig. 5, in the frame when in the closed position. The member 30, Fig. 3, is formed with a rearwardly opening channel 52 providing entry for a beaded edge of a fabric panel 55 when this panel is taken from a stored position and lowered into place on the door. The panel is provided with a shaped reinforcing rod 58, along three of its edges, Fig. 12, and is formed from a double thickness of fabric sewn at the edges and to the reinforcement. The rod 58 has depending ends 64, 65, adapted to engage respectively the channel formation of the upright 30, and the fitting 66 provided on the upper rail of the door 15. The forward edge of the panel has a bead portion 68, Fig. 8, which is formed by the stitched fabric encircling a core member 70 of twisted paper, cord &c. The panel is provided with a transparent window 74 of plastic material which is stitched to the fabric, or the window may be of safety glass surrounded by a metal frame pressed into engagement with the fabric. Snap fasteners 77 are provided for attachment of the panel to the door, and a slide fastened slit 80 is provided for the driver's arm. A vehicle body construction as in Fig. 13, has a lowered portion 107, a windshield frame 108 pivoted at 114, and a skeleton, rod framework hinged to the body at brackets 125, 127, the framework carrying a fabric panel 135 stitched thereto whose beaded and cored edge is adapted slidably to engage a channel-shaped member 146 welded to the side post 110. A metal frame 138 for a transparent member 137 is secured to the panel 135 by press fasteners 139. Fig. 16, shows a beaded panel utilized as a flexible top 150 which is secured to a header bar 109 forming part of the frame 108, the bar 109 having a channel member 153 secured thereto. Specification 607,182, [Group XXXII], is referred to.
