683,930. Winding reserve lengths of yarn. CELANESE CORPORATION OF AMERICA. Dec. 1, 1950 [Dec. 3, 1949], No. 29484/50. Class 120(ii) A twisting and winding device for producing packages of yarn having transfer tails comprises a spindle, yarn guide means adapted to traverse relatively to said spindle and to guide the yarn to and fro over one part of the length of a package support carried by said spindle while permitting the point of engagement of the yarn with said guide means to travel round said spindle, further yarn guide means adapted to guide said yarn to another part of said package support while permitting the point of engagement of the yarn with said further guide means to travel round the spindle and yarn securing means mounted on the spindle and adapted to rotate therewith and to lead yarn secured by it into engagement with said further yarn guide means. As shown yarn 3 is led through a guide 4 downwards to a traveller mounted on a spinning ring 6 carried by a holder 7 such that during normal operation the yarn is guided to a package support 8 to form a package 9. The support 8 frictionally engages a spindle 10 provided with a whorl 11 driven by a belt 12. A further guide means 13 in the form of a flat open spiral is fixed to a supporting bracket 14 and encircles the spindle 10 at a point just below the base of the yarn package support 8. Below the guide 13 is provided a collar 15 fixed to and rotated by spindle 10 which collar is provide with a narrow slot 16 which serves to grip and retain the leading end of yarn 3 such that during the first few turns of the spindle the yarn 3 slips automatically into the outermost convolution of the spiral guide 13 and is guided thereby on to the base of the package support 8 to form a plurality of windings 17. After passing through the convolutions of the spiral guide 13 the yarn slips out at the centre thereof and comes automatically under the sole control of the traveller 5 to wind the normal package 9.
