Abstract
683,454. Ventilating crankcases. BECKETT., R. C. March 2, 1951. No. 5146/51. Class 7 (ii). A pin 4 is supported within a chamber 11 having an outlet 10 connected to an engine manifold, and projects through a metering orifice 18 in a diaphragm 12, which may be corrugated, extending across the chamber and biased by means such as a spring 19 towards the chamber inlet 13 communicating with a crankcase connection 6. The pin tapers from the outlet to the inlet side of the diaphragm. There may be a filter element 28 to cleanse the crankcase gases, and a removable sediment bowl 25. The manifold vacuum causes the diaphragm to move upwardly to progressively decrease the flow area of the orifice and the bias of the spring is such that under idling conditions of the engine the orifice is adjacent point 21 of the pin so that the flow area is a minimum. The pin may have an oppositely tapered portion 23 so that an increase in manifold vacuum is prevented when the flow area is increased by movement of the diaphragm above the point 21.
