Abstract

The invention comprises vat dyes of the phthalocyanine series containing, attached to the carbon atoms of the phthalocyanine nucleus, groups of the formula -CO-R-COOH, in which R is an organic radical containing the COOH and CO groups in such positions that the corresponding dicarboxylic acids HOOC-R-COOH are capable of forming anhydrides. They are made by heating phthalocyanines with polycarboxylic acid anhydrides in presence of Friedel-Crafts condensing agents. In examples: (1) cobalt phthalocyanine is melted or heated in trichlorbenzene with succinic anhydride and aluminium, zinc, or iron chloride, or with phthalic anhydride and aluminium chloride; (2) metal-free phthalocyanine is melted with maleic anhydride and aluminium chloride; (3) iron phthalocyanine is melted with succinic anhydride and aluminium chloride. Other phthalocyanines specified are nickel or copper, and phthalocyanines containing halogen, nitro, phenyl, or benzyl groups. Other acid anhydrides specified are glutaric, pyrotartaric, maleic, citraconic, camphoric, quinolinic, cinchomeronic, and naphthalic, or halogen, nitro, carboxyl, sulpho, carbonamide, or sulphonamide substitution products thereof.
